Ripon Workhouse Museum and Garden

Follow the experience of people who entered the Victorian workhouse when poverty left them with few choices. Rooms, personal stories and the kitchen garden connect institutional rules with daily life. The museum reopened with a transformed visitor experience in July 2026, making this the most substantial of Ripon’s three linked museum visits.

Before you go

Give this museum its own generous allowance rather than rushing to use every part of an all-museums pass. There is no museum café; bring a picnic for the garden or plan lunch in the city.

The practical details

Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
Individual museum tickets and an all-three-museums pass are available, with return-visit validity under current terms. The published 2026 general season ends on 22 November. Check current prices, concessions and any event booking; do not rely on older redevelopment closure notices.
Access and getting around
Most of the visit is on one level, with an access lift and a ramp to the garden. Historic floors and stairs are uneven and some areas are dim. Accessible toilets are available; check the current route and lift suitability for your equipment or support needs.

Visiting with children
Hands-on interpretation can help children engage, but the subject includes poverty, institutional discipline and separation. Take breaks and choose the content that suits them. Holiday activities have specific dates; they are not guaranteed on an ordinary visit.

Practical information checked 14 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 1½–2 hours for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
