Follow the changing life of a house whose earliest surviving parts date to the fifteenth century, then step into its gardens when the weather suits. Rooms from different periods reward careful looking, from the shape of the old building to the way later occupants used it. Give the house time instead of adding it as a rushed stop between the gaol and lunch.

Before you go

The 2026 visitor season ends on 30 September, with Thursday, Friday and Saturday openings. The gardens are part of a paid visit, including a separate garden-only option.

Tickets and booking: Check the current opening page: 28 March–30 September 2026, Thursday–Saturday 10:30–16:30, last entry 15:30. Paid house and garden arrangements differ. Ask about any repair-related restrictions; do not rely on the house opening on other weekdays.
Access and getting around: The step-free entrance is through the signed alley on the town-square side; ring the bell. There is no lift upstairs, and historic floors slope with low doorways. Ground-floor and garden routes are largely level, with slate-chipping paths; read the full access guide.

Visiting with children: Choose a few rooms and compare everyday objects or building materials. Supervise on stairs and explain that displayed objects are not all for touching. The garden provides a change of pace when conditions allow.
