Mermaid Street

Walk a short section of Rye’s best-known cobbled street, looking at timber framing, old doorways and the slope down towards the quay. It links naturally with Lamb House and the Heritage Centre, making the streets themselves part of a town visit. Buildings include private homes and businesses, so enjoy the exterior view without expecting open interiors.

Wear shoes that grip and slow down on wet cobbles. This is a steep, working street; leave space for vehicles, residents and other walkers rather than stopping across its full width.

Access and getting around: The steep cobbled surface and narrow edge paths can be difficult with wheelchairs, walking aids or pushchairs. Choose a comfortable short section or use another approach to your booked attraction. A picturesque route is not necessarily the easiest route between the upper town and quay.
