Rye Castle Museum: Ypres Tower

The compact stone tower tells the story of Rye’s defences and its later use as a prison. Look into the cells, explore the available displays and add the medieval-style herb garden and Women’s Tower when open. The Gun Garden outside gives the castle a striking setting, but the full museum visit involves more changes of level than its small footprint suggests.

A ground-floor visit is possible using the ramp, but the upper areas and Women’s Tower have stairs. Decide whether that limited route suits your group before buying admission.

Tickets and booking: Paid adult admission; under-16s must be accompanied. Tickets are offered online, with seasonal opening and earlier winter closing. Check the current visitor page for holiday exceptions and last admission rather than relying on a full summer afternoon.
Access and getting around: A ramp serves the ground floor, where a virtual tour helps explain areas reached by stairs. Upper floors are not wheelchair accessible. Expect uneven floors, low doorways and steep steps in the Women’s Tower. The museum has no toilets; plan a stop at the nearby public facilities.

Visiting with children: Under-16s currently enter free with an accompanying adult. Prison cells and confinement stories suit some children better than others; keep the visit short if they find enclosed spaces unsettling. Adults should supervise stairs and low doorways.
