Shrewsbury Abbey

Across the English Bridge, the surviving abbey church offers a different chapter from the streets inside the river loop. Look along the Norman nave and consider the changing life of a monastery that became a parish church. Readers of the Cadfael stories may recognise the name, but the architecture and continuing worship provide reasons to visit without knowing the novels.

Tickets and booking: No ordinary entrance charge; donations are welcome. Group and organised tours should be arranged through the parish office and may be charged. Check services, special events and bank-holiday opening before crossing town for a visit.
Access and getting around: The South Door on Abbey Foregate has level wheelchair access; portable ramps serve the main West Doors with volunteer help. There is an accessible toilet and visitor parking. Contact the abbey to arrange assistance and confirm facilities around services.
