Shrewsbury Castle

Red sandstone walls above the station introduce one of Shrewsbury’s oldest landmarks. Inside, the Soldiers of Shropshire collection follows the county’s regimental history through uniforms, medals, pictures and equipment. Choose the paid museum for that subject, or enjoy a shorter look at the grounds when open. A castle visit here combines a historic setting with military collections rather than a large ruined fortress to roam.

The grounds are free to enter when open, but the museum is paid. Check the seasonal Tuesday–Saturday calendar and do not assume tower access is included in an ordinary visit.

Normal 2026 opening is Tuesday–Saturday within the published season, with Sunday/Monday and winter closures. On-site parking is generally unavailable; contact staff ahead for access-related assistance.
Access and getting around: Portable ramps provide access to the main hall, some ground-floor areas, shop and accessible toilet. The uphill approach and steeper grounds paths may require assistance for manual wheelchair users. Some exhibits remain inaccessible; contact staff about your route before arriving.

Visiting with children: Children interested in uniforms, equipment and the lives of soldiers may get most from the museum. Baby changing is available and picnics are welcome in the grounds. Supervise on slopes and discuss the war-related content as appropriate.
