Industrial heritage / SHREWSBURY
Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings
North of the centre, this former textile mill reveals an industrial Shrewsbury beyond the river-loop streets. Its iron frame helped change how large buildings could be constructed, while the exhibition follows the people who worked here through the mill and maltings years. Start with the ground-floor displays, then choose a separate tour if you want to understand more of the restored building.

The exhibition, Behind-the-Scenes Tour and Jubilee Tower Tour are different choices. Decide what you want before booking: the tower involves steep wooden stairs and cannot be reached simply by taking the lift.
The practical details
- Where to find it
- Spring Gardens, Shrewsbury SY1 2SZ, north of the railway station and historic centre.
Directions and arrival information ↗ - Tickets and booking
- Paid exhibition admission; English Heritage membership terms apply. Guided tours need their own reservation and the tower carries a separate charge, including for members. Check the seasonal opening calendar, tour availability and café hours before travelling out from the centre.
- Access and getting around
- The exhibition, café, shop and toilets have step-free access, with marked routes from parking. Behind-the-scenes upper floors have a lift. The tower’s final ascent uses steep stairs only and may be cancelled in extreme weather; sensory bags and wheelchair loans are available.
Official access information ↗ - Visiting with children
- Ask for the Flax and Barley family trail, with versions for ages 4–7 and 8–12. Hands-on and digital displays introduce work and engineering. Keep a family visit on the exhibition level if a tower climb would not suit everyone.
