Local history and art / SHREWSBURY
Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery
The former Music Hall on The Square is a useful place to begin making sense of Shrewsbury and its county. Archaeology, fossils, ceramics and social history sit within a building that is itself part of the town’s story. Choose a period or material that interests you, then connect it with the streets outside; the museum works as an introduction rather than an obligation to see every case.

Check the actual day: the museum currently closes Sundays and Mondays, apart from specifically announced bank-holiday openings. Its planned redevelopment does not mean every future gallery is already open.
The practical details
- Where to find it
- The Music Hall, The Square, Shrewsbury SY1 1LH.
Directions and arrival information ↗ - Tickets and booking
- Free general admission, with donations welcome. Current normal opening is Tuesday–Saturday; special bank-holiday dates are announced separately. The café closes earlier than the museum. Check temporary displays and event terms before travelling.
- Access and getting around
- A passenger lift serves the floors, with a platform lift and ramps addressing some internal changes of level. The council-commissioned access survey records heavy doors and restricted turning space in some toilets. Ask staff to confirm the best route and suitable available toilet for your needs.
Official access information ↗ - Visiting with children
- Baby-changing facilities are recorded in the access guide. Keep a first visit selective and check the current holiday or toddler programme if a structured activity matters; workshops may need a separate booking.
Practical information checked 14 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.
Make it part of your day
Allow 1–1½ hours for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
