Skipton Canal Basin and town towpath
Watch the boats around the basin and follow a short section of town towpath for a different view of Skipton’s working waterway. Old canal buildings, bridges and moorings provide plenty to notice without committing to a countryside hike. Choose a turnaround near the centre and leave the longer walk towards Gargrave for a separate plan.
Keep the return distance in mind. A short bankside look is enough between a museum visit and lunch; the five-mile Gargrave route is a different outing.

- Walking beside the public canal is free and requires no attraction ticket. Boat trips, hire, food and parking charge separately. Check local notices for towpath restrictions and turn back where conditions or access change.
- Access and getting around
- Central towpath sections are paved, but access points, bridges and surface changes need checking for your route. The wharf includes cobbles and uneven slabs. Use the Canal & River Trust accessibility map when planning with wheels, and avoid narrow or slippery sections that do not suit you.

- Keep children close beside unguarded water and moving boats. Look from the public path rather than stepping onto moorings or vessels; this walk does not include boat entry.
