Skipton Castle

Follow the self-guided route through a remarkably complete medieval stronghold, from its courtyard and yew tree into rooms linked by narrow passages and spiral stairs. This is the main paid history stop at the top of Skipton High Street.

Before you go

Allow around ninety minutes rather than arriving close to last entry. The tour moves between rooms and open areas, so bring a waterproof even when most of your day is indoors.

Tickets and booking: Normal opening is daily from 10am, except 23–25 December, with last admission at 4pm and closing at 5pm. Online booking guarantees entry and may cost less; walk-up payment is card/contactless only. Check the current calendar and allow separately for parking.
Access and getting around: The castle interior has no wheelchair access: 27 steps lead to the courtyard, followed by spiral stairs, uneven floors and some low doorways. Grounds, shop and tearoom have different access arrangements; contact staff before booking a grounds-focused visit. The castle’s access statement says there is no accessible toilet.

Visiting with children: The illustrated tour sheet gives children things to seek out. Buggies are best left at reception as the castle advises; supervise on stairs and in dimly lit rooms, and stop before everyone becomes tired.
