Skipton Castle Woods
Leave the busy High Street for the wooded valley of Eller Beck behind the castle. Water, old industrial traces and the change from streets to trees give this walk its character. The lower river-valley route can be an outing in its own right; upper paths add climbing rather than an essential part of every visit.
Use the Woodland Trust map and choose the lower out-and-back if you want a shorter walk. Allow time to reach the Old Sawmill entrance as well as time inside the wood.

- The wood is free to enter independently of a castle ticket. The Trust’s mapped lower river-valley route is about 1.4km and suggests an hour, with the town approach additional. Check current signs and weather; public access does not mean every path is suitable in poor conditions.
- Access and getting around
- There is no step-free entrance. The town approach includes steps and an elevated towpath; paths have slopes, uneven places and mud after rain. Upper routes add steep sections and more steps. Lightweight pushchairs may manage parts of the lower route, but wheelchair access is unsuitable.

- Stay close beside the beck and on the canal approach. Choose an early turnaround with younger walkers. Give grazing cattle space if encountered and keep dogs under control.
