SOUTHWOLD GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

A coastal pause beside the beach huts / SOUTHWOLD

Southwold promenade and North Beach

Follow the promenade beside the beach huts and choose a manageable section of Southwold’s main seafront. You can enjoy the view from the paved route or spend longer on the beach when conditions suit. The north promenade and the dunes of the less-developed south beach offer different terrain; this stop focuses on the town’s main seafront.

Before you go

Check tides and conditions before going onto the beach. The published 2026 North Beach lifeguard season ended on 6 September, so do not assume patrols are present now.

The practical details

Where to find it
North Beach and promenade, between the pier area and Gun Hill in Southwold.
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
No admission booking is needed. Budget separately for parking, food or beach-hut hire. Check current signs and RNLI information; beach wheelchair hire and any hired hut need separate arrangements.
Access and getting around
A ramp beside the pier leads from the promenade onto the beach, but sand and shingle differ from the paved route. Summer beach wheelchairs are subject to availability and require advance arrangement, normally at least three days. Accessible public toilets are listed near the pier car park and Church Green.
Official access information ↗
Visiting with children
Stay away from groynes, rocks and the pier’s legs and supervise children near the sea. Choose a short promenade visit if waves, wind or the tide make beach play unsuitable; do not treat the harbour mouth as a bathing beach.

Practical information checked 15 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 30–90 minutes for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
