Working boats and a longer walk from town / SOUTHWOLD
Southwold Harbour and Blackshore
The Southwold side of the River Blyth has boatyards, huts and moored craft that show a different character from the pier. Make it a destination for a walk and a food stop, leaving time for the return. Watching the harbour from public routes is worthwhile without adding a boat trip or crossing to Walberswick.

Keep the visit on the Southwold bank unless you have checked a separate crossing and return. The ferry is seasonal and can change with weather and tide.
The practical details
- Where to find it
- Blackshore and Ferry Road, south of Southwold town centre, on the north bank of the River Blyth.
Directions and arrival information ↗ - Tickets and booking
- No admission ticket for a public-route harbour visit. Food businesses have individual hours. The Walberswick ferry charges separately and currently operates a dated seasonal timetable, with cash payment and weather/tide changes; check the operator if adding it. No crossing is required by these plans.
- Access and getting around
- Public approaches include unmade roads, mixed surfaces and exposed stretches. Choose a short section that suits your mobility rather than assuming the entire harbour walk is step-free. The town council lists a RADAR-accessible public toilet at the harbour end of Ferry Road.
Official access information ↗ - Visiting with children
- Keep children close around working areas and the water’s edge. Boats and equipment are for working use, not climbing. Include the walk back in the day’s energy budget and choose a food stop before everyone is tired.

Make it part of your day
Allow 45–90 minutes at the harbour, plus travel for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
