The National Wallace Monument

The monument rises above Causewayhead on Abbey Craig, separate from the castle’s Old Town hill. Its galleries tell the story of William Wallace and the climb ends at the open Crown with far-reaching views in clear weather. Make this the main excursion for a half day, allowing for travel, the approach and the climb before choosing anything else.

Before you go

There are 246 narrow spiral steps to the top. A shuttle to the entrance does not remove the staircase inside, and poor weather can affect opening or the view.

Tickets and booking: Book a timed entry; walk-up space is not guaranteed. Add the approach from the car park, normally a 15–20-minute steep walk or a capacity-limited shuttle with a midday break. Check winter weather notices and current city buses before travelling. Castle and Historic Scotland membership arrangements do not automatically apply.
Access and getting around: The tower galleries and Crown require stairs; the ascent has no handrail. The steep approach is also challenging. The shuttle has entrance steps and can carry only lightweight folding wheelchairs, not powered chairs. Entrance-level facilities also have shallow steps. Visiting with children: Choose this for children comfortable with a long, confined staircase. Pushchairs must be left at reception and baby carriers are not permitted on the climb. Under-16s need an accompanying adult. With toddlers, a museum-and-park day may be much easier.
