Dunnottar Castle

The cliff-top setting is the reason to give Dunnottar time: the approach, descent and climb are part of the visit, followed by ruined buildings on an exposed headland. This is a substantial outdoor outing south of Stonehaven rather than a quick indoor castle stop. Choose a clear enough day to enjoy the setting and leave energy for the return stairs.

Check the current opening and wind conditions before setting out. The viewpoint and the paid castle interior are different experiences with very different access.

Where to find it: Dunnottar Castle, about 1.6 miles south of Stonehaven

Tickets and booking: Buy online or pay by card on arrival. Last admission is an hour before closing; seasonal hours shorten in autumn and winter. High winds, snow or ice can close the site. Toilets are inside the paid castle grounds.
Access and getting around: The castle is not wheelchair accessible: many steps descend and climb to the entrance, with further stairs and uneven ground inside. A roughly 300-metre relatively flat earth path reaches the cliff-top viewpoint from parking, but conditions vary.

Visiting with children: Children under 16 need an adult. Supervise closely around cliffs and steps; there is no pram storage. A viewpoint visit can be more realistic than the full castle for a group unable to manage the stairs.
