Corfe Castle

The broken walls and tilted towers of Corfe Castle rise above the village, making a strong contrast with Swanage’s seaside streets. Explore the remains of the royal stronghold and follow its stories of defence, destruction and everyday life. A railway journey from Swanage can make the visit part of a satisfying day, provided you leave room for the village, lunch and the return train.

The castle ruins are largely outdoors, with steep slopes, steps and uneven ground. Choose a dry, manageable visit rather than treating a castle ticket as an indoor rainy-day plan.

Tickets and booking: Ordinary visitors do not need to prebook; groups of fifteen or more should arrange ahead. National Trust members enter free, while non-members pay. Railway fares and non-member parking are separate; check castle closing time and the last train back.
Access and getting around: Upper ruins require steep, stepped access. A loan mobility scooter can serve the route from Castle View and the lower Outer Bailey only, subject to availability and weather. Accessible toilets are by the ticket office, with a Changing Places facility at Castle View during its opening hours.

Visiting with children: Under-fives enter free; child admission covers ages 5–17. Keep children close around uneven ruins and drops, and take a break in the village rather than pushing on to every high point. Borrowable ear defenders and a visual guide are available.
