Coastal nature with a useful indoor base / SWANAGE
Durlston Country Park and Castle
High above Swanage, Durlston combines sea views, woodland and grassland with a free visitor centre inside its Victorian castle. Start with the Rock Room, films and ranger advice, then choose a short trail suited to the weather and your group. The Great Globe and cliff scenery give the park a distinctive character, but you do not need to complete a long coastal circuit to enjoy it.

The approach from Swanage is about a mile uphill, and the usual D5 bus is not running this year. Arrange a taxi or drive if that climb does not suit you; save your walking energy for a chosen route in the park.
The practical details
- Where to find it
- Lighthouse Road, Swanage BH19 2JL, on the headland south of town.
Directions and arrival information ↗ - Tickets and booking
- Park and visitor-centre entry are free; parking is charged. The castle normally opens daily except Christmas Day and Boxing Day, with a shorter winter day. Check the gallery programme because weddings can close that level while the rest stays open.
- Access and getting around
- A gently sloping 75-metre Timeline path links the nearest car park and castle. Platform lifts serve the castle levels, with accessible toilets. Outdoor trails vary: the clifftop route includes uneven surfaces and a very steep section. Book a Tramper ahead and discuss suitable routes with the rangers.
Official access information ↗ - Visiting with children
- Begin indoors and ask about a manageable woodland route or activities for children. The park has wild-play opportunities, but cliffs and uneven paths need close supervision. Activity bags and organised events may have separate charges.
