TARBERT (HARRIS) GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

An exposed coastal walk to a lighthouse setting / NEAR TARBERT (HARRIS)

Eilean Glas lighthouse walk on Scalpay

Cross onto Scalpay and walk from Outend towards the red-and-white lighthouse at Eilean Glas. The sea views and the approach make this a substantial outing rather than a quick photograph from the car. The nearby community bothy offers interpretation and a place to pause, with the return walk still to come.

Before you go

There is no public vehicle access beyond Outend car park, and the lighthouse cannot be seen from the public road. The route is over 2 km each way; allow more time than a brisk walking estimate if stopping or travelling with children.

The practical details

Where to find it
Outend to Eilean Glas, Isle of Scalpay, reached by bridge from Harris
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
No ordinary walking ticket is required. Arrange the drive or other transport to Outend and the return. The community bothy is a day shelter with interpretation, not overnight accommodation; follow local access notices.
Access and getting around
The pedestrian route crosses exposed, uneven coastal ground. Check the weather and your group’s ability before starting; no step-free coastal circuit is promised. Lighthouse grounds are privately owned and the operational tower is not offered as a public interior tour.
Official access information ↗
Visiting with children
Suitable for families comfortable with a longer outdoor walk, not a short pushchair promenade. Keep children away from cliff edges and open water, and turn back early if the weather changes.

Practical information checked 15 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 2–3 hours, excluding travel for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
