Wells-next-the-Sea Beach

Beyond the town’s long harbour approach, Wells Beach opens into a broad sweep of sand backed by pines and colourful huts. Give it an unhurried visit rather than squeezing it into a quick quay stop. Staying near the main beach lets you enjoy the changing light and shoreline without making an ambitious walk across tidal channels.

Before you go

Read the local RNLI tide warning before exploring outlying sandbanks: get back to the main beach at least four hours before Wells Bar high water, or earlier if the siren sounds or water starts entering the channels. Do not wait for the sea to reach you.

Where to find it: At the northern end of Beach Road, beyond Wells town; beach car park NR23 1DR.

Tickets and booking: Beach entry is free; parking and the seasonal beach bus are paid. The Easter–October bus operates flexibly with weather and demand, so check that day’s service. The former harbour railway no longer runs to the beach.
Access and getting around: A tarmac slope beside the Beach Café reaches the dog-free beach area; pinewood entrances include wooden stairs and a slope. Sand remains difficult for ordinary wheels. Ask about current toilet provision before travelling: the operator still carries an earlier renovation notice.

Visiting with children: Choose a main-beach base and keep children away from tidal channels. Bring layers and enough food for the outward and return journey. Follow the signs for dog-free areas and nesting-bird restrictions.
