State rooms and an estate beyond Wells / NEAR WELLS-NEXT-THE-SEA
Holkham Hall
Holkham Hall gives a Wells holiday a different focus: grand Palladian rooms, paintings and the scale of an inhabited country estate. The hall ticket also covers the Walled Garden and Holkham Stories, so it is worth allowing more than a hurried house tour. The estate lies at Holkham, west of Wells, and works best as the main outing rather than a quick extra between the railway and beach.

Choose a hall-opening day: the current 2026 programme is Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays through 29 October. The garden and other estate attractions have different calendars, so an open park does not guarantee access to the state rooms.
The practical details
- Where to find it
- Holkham, roughly two miles west of Wells; use the signed visitor entrance from the A149.
Directions and arrival information ↗ - Tickets and booking
- Choose the appropriate house ticket and check room availability; ordinary admission can be bought on arrival or booked online. It includes the Walled Garden and Holkham Stories, while parking is separately charged. Bus passengers alight in Holkham village, then face about a mile’s walk to the hall, partly uphill.
- Access and getting around
- The house approach includes ramps, slopes and uneven surfaces. Access to the upper state rooms uses a staff-operated stair-climbing machine, not a conventional lift; discuss wheelchair suitability and availability with the estate before booking.
Official access information ↗ - Visiting with children
- Mix a manageable selection of rooms with the estate story and an outdoor break. Check current child admission and any separately charged activities; a house ticket is not an all-activities pass.
Practical information checked 15 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.
Make it part of your day
Allow 3–4 hours with the included attractions and a break for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
