Vicars’ Close

The two rows of medieval houses and their tall chimneys show the domestic side of cathedral life. Built for the Vicars Choral, the Close remains residential, so enjoy its architecture from the available street space and keep doors and garden entrances clear. A brief look fits naturally beside the museum or cathedral; it is not a promise of house interiors or a new visitor exhibition.

Tickets and booking: An ordinary exterior look does not need a sightseeing ticket. Interior tours and future interpretation spaces have separate arrangements; the announced conservation project is not evidence that those spaces are open. Check current cathedral notices and follow any temporary access restrictions.
Access and getting around: Historic stone setts create an uneven surface, with kerbs and changing restrictions during works. Ask the cathedral about a suitable current approach if mobility or pushchair access affects your visit. Keep entrances clear and use the public street route rather than private gardens or buildings.

Visiting with children: Make this a short look at chimneys, windows and the relationship with the cathedral. Keep children close around works and residential entrances. It is an occupied street, so save running and noisy games for a more suitable outdoor space.
