Wells & Mendip Museum

The museum puts the small city into its wider Mendip setting, bringing together local history, natural history and changing exhibitions. The Wells City Galleries tell stories of residents, work and everyday life; a ground-floor foyer display covers the same broad themes for visitors who cannot reach the upper rooms. It makes a manageable indoor companion to the cathedral rather than another monumental building.

The museum normally opens Tuesday–Saturday and is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Check which exhibitions you want to see and their floor before buying a ticket if stairs are a barrier.

Tickets and booking: Ordinary admission is paid. Check the current Tuesday–Saturday schedule, exhibition programme and any separately arranged events or group visits. The museum lists reduced admission for disabled visitors and free entry for a carer. Confirm that a particular gallery is open if it is your main reason for visiting.
Access and getting around: Ground-floor exhibitions have level access for wheelchairs and mobility scooters, with an accessible toilet. The first floor has uneven wooden floors and steps between galleries and is not wheelchair accessible. Contact the team about the available ground-floor visit; some limited Blue Badge parking is on Cathedral Green.

Visiting with children: Start with a few objects or one local story and ask about current family activities. Under-fives enter free; family tickets cover one or two adults and up to three children aged 5–16 under the current policy. Allow a snack break afterwards rather than expecting continuous attention through every gallery.
