Tankerton Slopes and beach

East of Whitstable’s harbour, Tankerton’s grassy slopes overlook rows of beach huts and a shingle shore. A promenade stroll and a sit above the beach make a satisfying coastal outing without needing to walk far out onto the exposed tidal spit known as The Street.

Before you go

Keep The Street out of the required route: rising water and strong cross-currents have caused rescues here.

Tickets and booking: No admission ticket. Follow local signs and current conditions; no lifeguard cover or safe swimming conditions are promised. RNLI advice identifies tidal cut-off and strong currents around The Street.
Access and getting around: The upper lawns slope down towards the shore, while shingle is uneven underfoot. Choose a suitable promenade approach rather than assuming all hillside routes are step-free; leave extra time for gradients.

Visiting with children: Bring footwear suitable for pebbles and keep beach time flexible in wind or poor conditions. Check current tides and RNLI advice before going near the water.
