Greyfriars House and Garden

Behind Friar Street’s timber frontage is a merchant’s house whose survival owes much to the people who restored it. A volunteer-led tour explores its changing domestic life and the salvaged objects that helped bring it back from decline. The walled garden gives a small, enclosed contrast to the street outside. Choose this for stories about a lived-in building rather than a large country-house circuit.

House-tour places are limited and depend on volunteer availability. Contact the team ahead, especially if travelling specifically for the interior, and check in at No. 14 opposite the house.

Tickets and booking: The whole-house visit is normally a paid guided tour, free for National Trust members; usual tour days are Tuesday–Saturday, subject to availability and seasonal programming. Garden, café and bookshop entry is free when open. Groups larger than six should book directly; check the calendar for the exact date.
Access and getting around: Expect cobbles, narrow doorways and steps into the house and down into the garden; there is no lift to the first floor. A ramp can be requested for the café. There is no accessible toilet on site. Discuss the specific route with staff before booking a tour.

Visiting with children: A house tour lasts roughly an hour, so it suits children happy to listen and stay with a group. For a shorter visit, the garden and café can be considered during their own opening hours. Garden steps and narrow historic rooms need supervision and planning for buggies.
