Walk / YORK
York City Walls
Walk a section of the elevated city walls for a different view of York. Choose a shorter stretch if you want to leave time for other stops.

Before you go
The wall walk has steps and exposed sections. Check council closures and access guidance; it is not a step-free route.
The practical details
- Where to find it
- Several entrances around central York; use the council walkway map
Directions and arrival information ↗ - Tickets and booking
- Check council opening and closure notices before setting out. Weather can close the walkway; do not plan it as a guaranteed finish.
- Access and getting around
- The elevated walkway is reached by steps and has narrow sections and unguarded edges. It is not wheelchair accessible; consider pavement-level views instead.
Official access information ↗ - Visiting with children
- Prams, buggies and pushchairs are not allowed on the walkway. Closely supervise children and choose a short section with a clear exit.
Practical information checked 14 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.
Make it part of your day
Allow 45–90 minutes for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
