Aberystwyth Castle Grounds
The surviving walls and towers mark a much larger medieval fortress than a first glance suggests. Walk through the grounds to understand the castle’s position between the town and the sea, then pause at the open views before returning to the waterfront. It is an outdoor visit to ruins and grounds, with the setting doing as much work as the surviving stone.

Before you go
Use the open public paths and follow local work barriers. The castle footbridges reopened in November 2025, but the council’s later update still describes unfinished lighting work.

- Ordinary grounds access is free; there is no enclosed castle museum to book. Check local notices and the council’s promenade project update before a special journey. Food and parking are separate, and exposed areas may be unsuitable in rough weather.
- Access and getting around
- Routes through the ruins and grounds include gradients and uneven historic surfaces. Follow signed open paths and choose a shorter circuit if necessary.

- The council maintains a playground at the castle, making a break possible alongside the ruins. Supervise children around the stonework and exposed headland; do not make climbing the walls part of the visit.
