A valley journey to Devil’s Bridge / ABERYSTWYTH

Vale of Rheidol Railway from Aberystwyth

This is the longer railway outing: a narrow-gauge journey from the coast into the Rheidol Valley, with wooded slopes and a changing landscape beyond the town. The standard return trip includes a stop at Devil’s Bridge and entry to the Engine Shed display back at Aberystwyth. Treat the train as the day’s main experience rather than a quick transfer between town attractions.

Before you go

The usual return takes 2 hours 45 minutes, including about 45 minutes at Devil’s Bridge. Waterfalls are a separate paid attraction; accessible and First Class tickets require the booked return train.

Where to find it: Vale of Rheidol station, Park Avenue, Aberystwyth SY23 1PG; distinct from the adjacent mainline station.

Tickets and booking: Arrive at least 20 minutes before departure. Daily ordinary services are currently advertised through 1 November 2026; check your exact date. Standard tickets can use a later public train if available, but accessible and First Class places return on the same train. Parking and food cost extra; severe weather can alter services.
Access and getting around: Reserve the wheelchair space in the open-sided summer carriage; closed and First Class carriages currently have no wheelchair access. Discuss larger chairs or scooters and ramp limits in advance. Both terminal stations have accessible toilets and baby changing, but there are no toilets on the train.

Visiting with children: Allow for an hour in each direction without an onboard toilet. Use facilities before boarding, bring a layer for open-sided travel and keep the stop at Devil’s Bridge simple. A snack and rest may be a better fit than rushing to the separate waterfalls.
