Alnwick Castle

Alnwick Castle combines a medieval fortress with the furnished rooms of a family home. Choose the State Rooms and Great Kitchen for domestic history, then leave time for the courtyards, museums and the day’s talks or activities. Film locations are part of its appeal, but the scale of the site makes this a substantial visit even without a broomstick-training session.

A castle ticket does not admit you to The Alnwick Garden or Lilidorei. Decide which site matters most before paying for several full visits.

Tickets and booking: The castle opens seasonally from spring to autumn and closes for winter. Check the live date calendar, especially near the October season end, and confirm room availability. Online tickets include return visits during public opening periods; event and activity arrangements still apply. A carer ticket requires the venue’s evidence checks.
Access and getting around: Cobbles, gravel, gradients and narrow tower stairs limit access. The State Rooms route has seven steps before a seated lift that cannot take wheelchairs; it is not a step-free solution. Contact staff about transfers, loan equipment and accessible toilets. Blue Badge parking near Castle Square can shorten the approach.

Visiting with children: Broomstick training and other activities are included in general admission, but use the day’s programme to plan participation. Under-fives enter free; children aged 16 and under must be supervised by an adult. Prams must be left outside the State Rooms and Great Kitchen.
