The Armitt Museum

Look beyond the familiar storybook characters to Beatrix Potter’s work on fungi, alongside art and the history of Ambleside. This compact museum brings together subjects that help explain the surrounding landscape and town. Give a few objects or drawings your attention rather than trying to read every label before lunch.

Choose the date first: the museum closes on Sundays and Mondays, and winter opening also excludes Tuesdays. Special events need advance booking even when ordinary admission is available at reception.

Tickets and booking: 31 March–31 October 2026: Tuesday–Saturday 10am–5pm, last admission 4.30pm. 4 November–19 December: Wednesday–Saturday 10.30am–4.30pm, last admission 4pm. Adult admission currently £7.50, with a 12-month return ticket. Check later holiday dates and current exhibitions before travelling.
Access and getting around: Level entrance and two floors with a platform stairlift between levels and to the toilets. The museum describes wheelchair and buggy access, an accessible toilet and one Blue Badge parking space. Contact staff about the lift and individual requirements; general parking is across the road, not automatically in the neighbouring university grounds.

Visiting with children: Under-16s enter free with the current admission offer. Choose a short visit around natural history or a current family activity. This is a museum, separate from the walk-through World of Beatrix Potter attraction in Bowness; check any event’s ages and booking.
