Choose the Armitt for a museum-led morning, giving the local history and natural-history drawings time before lunch in town. Its calendar matters more than the forecast: it is normally closed on Sundays and Mondays in the published season, with winter opening reduced to Wednesday–Saturday. On a closed day, start with the cinema programme instead of arriving at the museum and improvising in the rain. A Zeffirellis screening can provide a substantial period indoors, but book a film you want to see and check which screen or building is being used. Allow time to eat before or after it; a dinner-and-cinema package has its own booking and menu terms. If combining the museum and cinema, allow around ten to fifteen minutes for the outdoor town transfer, longer for crossings or slower walking. Contact the venue about access to the exact screen, since facilities differ between locations. Bridge House is currently closed to ordinary interior visits, so its little exterior stop is not a rainy-day attraction to fill an hour. The separately booked escape-box experience may suit older children or adults, subject to availability and access, but it needs planning. Leave Stock Ghyll Force and Stagshaw for conditions in which you want to walk on uneven ground. For a shorter day, one museum and lunch or one film and a meal is enough; there is no need to walk to Waterhead simply to complete a route.

Look beyond the familiar storybook characters to Beatrix Potter’s work on fungi, alongside art and the history of Ambleside. This compact museum brings together subjects that help explain the surrounding landscape and town. Give a few objects or drawings your attention rather than trying to read every label before lunch.
Choose a film from the independent cinema programme and make it the fixed point of a slower Ambleside day. The restaurant makes a meal-and-film outing possible without another drive, but check the screen location on your booking: the operation uses more than one venue in town. It is a useful indoor choice when a woodland walk no longer appeals.
