Follow the woodland route above Ambleside to the roughly 70-foot waterfall, where the stream splits around the rocks. The sound of moving water and shaded paths make a different outing from the lakeshore. It is close to the shops, but the climb and ground conditions deserve proper walking shoes.
Use the signed woodland paths and give the return descent time. After prolonged rain, choose another activity if the ground or water conditions make the route uncomfortable.

- No ordinary admission charge or advance booking for the walk. Check daylight, weather and local signs on arrival. Do not treat a stronger waterfall after rain as a reason to ignore slippery paths or barriers. Parking and travel costs are separate.
- Access and getting around
- The uphill woodland loop has uneven and slippery surfaces. It is not a level town promenade; check the route for your needs and expect wet ground after rain. Keep to marked paths and viewing areas. Town facilities are separate from the woodland walk.

- Suitable for children who can manage an uphill woodland outing, with close supervision near water and on the descent. A pushchair walk through town or a stop in Rothay Park may be a better choice for younger children. Carry a drink and allow rests.
