Ambleside Roman Fort and Borrans Park

Explore the low stone remains of the Roman fort at Waterhead, then pause by the water in neighbouring Borrans Park. The setting helps make sense of the fort’s role in supplying the Roman frontier. This is an open archaeological site, so a little reading or the official audio guide adds more than expecting a reconstructed building.

Before you go

Plan the Waterhead journey as part of the outing. It is a separate walk south from central Ambleside, and you still need to get back after the lakeshore pause.

Tickets and booking: Free entry during reasonable daylight hours. No ordinary booking or staffed indoor visitor centre is promised. Use current signs, and check the official free audio guide before arriving if wanted. Waterhead parking is charged; food and facilities are separate from the fort.
Access and getting around: English Heritage flags uneven ground, drops and livestock. The approach through Borrans Park leads to a gate into the fort field; grass and archaeological surfaces may be wet or rough. Keep dogs on leads around livestock. Check a suitable route rather than assuming the whole site has paved access.

Visiting with children: Look for the building outlines and use the lake as a clue to why people settled here. Keep children off vulnerable remains and supervise beside water. A short fort visit and picnic can work better than adding a long woodland climb.
