Arundel Town Centre and Quayside

Explore the lower High Street, Tarrant Street and the town’s river edge, leaving time to look into independent shops or stop at a café. The bridge and quay give a different perspective on the castle above the town. This is a short public-street wander with optional spending, rather than a long walk along the floodplain.

Before you go

Start near the bridge for a compact route. Climbing towards the cathedral is optional; return to the lower streets if you want to keep the walk shorter and avoid the steepest part of town.

Tickets and booking: Public streets and the quay do not require a ticket; parking, shopping, food and any boat trip are separate costs. Check shop hours rather than assuming every business opens daily. The council publishes market-day road closures and bus diversions; allow extra time on those dates.
Access and getting around: Expect kerbs, crossings, sloping streets and narrow sections of pavement. Keep the riverside section short if surfaces or water levels are unsuitable. Public toilets are listed at Mill Road car park. Market days change traffic arrangements and bus stops, so check the council notice and your current return service.

Visiting with children: Choose a short route and keep children close beside traffic and the river. Looking at boats and the castle from below can be enough before a meal. Shopping streets are not an equipped play area, and riverside railings should not be climbed.
