The Bowes Museum
Spend time with paintings, decorative art and objects collected for a grand museum on the edge of town. Rather than trying to cover every gallery, choose two interests and leave room for something unexpected. The celebrated Silver Swan is a reason to check the day’s programme, not a reason to rush through the rest.

- Book or check current day admission and any separate event conditions. On 21 October 2026 the museum closes at 4pm and the café at 3.30pm. No Silver Swan performance is scheduled on 11–13 December 2026 during the Winter Market. Check for further notices and parking gate times.
- Access and getting around
- The museum lists an accessible entrance on the east side, reached from behind the building, with a buzzer for assistance. A lift serves all floors; accessible toilets and loan wheelchairs are available. Reserve a wheelchair ahead and consult the access page for your route.

- Under-18 admission is currently free, while most accompanying adults need a ticket. Pick a manageable group of objects and ask about activities available that day rather than assuming a workshop is running.
