Most adults need paid admission; a free child ticket does not make the whole family visit free. St Mary’s on Newgate offers a quieter stop on the way between museum and town centre, provided it is open and not being used for a service. Do not substitute the castle or Egglestone Abbey simply because they are historic buildings: both are open-air ruins. Woodland paths can worsen after rain, so Flatts Wood should wait for suitable conditions. For a shorter wet-weather plan, select two museum galleries and a break, then leave without trying to complete the collection. Confirm café hours separately if relying on food inside, and ask the museum team about access before arrival if wet-weather transfers are difficult.
