Egglestone Abbey
Look through the roofless abbey church and the surviving domestic buildings at this smaller historic site above a bend in the Tees. Its exposed setting makes it a good contrast to a museum afternoon. Leave enough time to pause among the ruins without mistaking free entry for a fully serviced attraction.
Use toilets and buy supplies in town first: English Heritage lists no facilities at the abbey. Car parking is charged for non-members even though admission is free.
