An independent town centre to explore / BARNARD CASTLE
Walk through Horse Market and Market Place to the distinctive round Market Cross, using the streets to get a feel for the town between bigger visits. Looking at architecture and shopfronts costs nothing; browsing can be as brief or leisurely as you choose. This is a working shopping centre rather than an open-air museum.

Look at the Market Cross from the pavement: it sits amid traffic, so do not step into the road for a photograph.
Practical information checked 15 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.
Allow 30–60 minutes for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
