Abbey Gardens and Abbey Ruins
The abbey ruins and planted gardens put Bury’s monastic past beside its everyday green space. You can look at the surviving masonry, choose a garden section and pause on a bench without buying an attraction ticket. This is a useful companion to the neighbouring cathedral, but also a complete short outing for a picnic or time with children. Seasonal planting changes the view; the ruins remain the reason to look beyond the flower beds.
Check the closing time of the gate you intend to use. Some gates shut before the main Abbey Gate, so a late afternoon shortcut may not be available for your return.

- Ordinary garden access is free and needs no booking. Gate times change seasonally; refreshments and booked activities such as tennis cost extra.
- Access and getting around
- Choose a suitable garden entrance and surfaced route for your needs; ruins and different garden sections are not a single audited step-free circuit. The council lists toilets and a Changing Places facility; check access arrangements for the latter.

- The play area offers a change from sightseeing. Supervise children around the ruins and river, and plan a toilet stop before settling in for a picnic.
