Things to do near Bury St Edmunds

Ickworth and West Stow offer two genuinely different trips beyond town. Choose Ickworth for its house, gardens and estate, or West Stow for archaeology and reconstructed Anglo-Saxon buildings. Both involve outdoor movement, distinct admission rules and a rural approach. Pick one as the main outing and arrange the return before leaving Bury.

Plan your visit

For Ickworth, allow 3–5 hours on site with a 45–60-minute meal break included, plus outward and return travel. Check the house-works notice and separate opening hours first. Enter through Horringer; the National Trust warns against routes through Chevington. If travelling by bus, check your date’s service and the walk from the village stop to the visitor centre. The shorter version is one open house section and a small garden visit. All timing allowances are editorial estimates. At West Stow, allow 2–3 hours for galleries and village, then a food break at the café or appropriate country-park area. Do not eat inside the village or museum. Ground conditions matter, particularly on the unpaved incline, so ask about access before setting off. A shorter visit can prioritise the galleries and a few reconstructed buildings. Check the exact visitor entrance and both directions of travel. If a practical bus connection is unavailable, arrange a taxi return rather than assuming one will be waiting. Combining both sites can consume the day in transfers; repeat visits or a longer stay are better reasons to consider the shared Moyse’s Hall/West Stow Heritage Ticket.

Ickworth Estate

Ickworth’s rotunda, house interiors and extensive grounds make it a separate outing from Bury’s town centre. Choose the house and a modest garden walk if architecture and collections matter most, or allow longer outdoors with a café or picnic break. Different parts of the estate open at different times. The National Trust currently warns that house hours may change at short notice while its fire-alarm system is upgraded, so check before travelling specifically for the rooms.
