BUXTON GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

Woodland & hilltop views / BUXTON

Buxton Country Park and Solomon’s Temple

Walk through Grin Low Woods towards the Victorian hilltop folly known as Solomon’s Temple. The climb gives a different view of Buxton from the sheltered gardens in town, while woodland paths and traces of the landscape’s industrial past provide interest along the way. Choose the length of your walk before adding the tower viewpoint.

Before you go

Pick up the current trail map at Poole’s Cavern Visitor Centre. A shorter woodland walk can be enough when wind, visibility or energy make the hilltop less appealing.

The practical details

Where to find it
Grin Low Woods, approached from Poole’s Cavern on Green Lane, Buxton
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
Ordinary woodland walking is free and separate from paid cave admission. Thomas’s Trail booklets and special events have their own prices or ticket inclusions. Parking may cost. Follow current signs and marked paths; woodland management and weather can affect routes. Check daylight and your return journey before setting off late.
Access and getting around
The operator describes the woodland routes as steep and rough in places and unsuitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Wear footwear suited to uneven ground and allow for the descent. The exposed summit can feel very different from the town below; do not rely on a tower climb if current access or conditions are unsuitable.
Official access information ↗
Visiting with children
Choose a modest distance and allow time for rests rather than making the summit compulsory. Bring drinks and a snack, supervise around uneven ground and livestock, and keep dogs on leads. Use the visitor-centre facilities before leaving during their opening hours.

Practical information checked 14 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 1½–2½ hours from the visitor-centre area for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
