CAERNARFON GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

Fortress courtyards, towers and Welsh history / CAERNARFON

Caernarfon Castle

The castle dominates the meeting of town and river, but its scale makes more sense once you step inside. Polygonal towers and bands of coloured masonry were part of Edward I’s statement of power after war with the Welsh princes. Explore the courtyards and whichever open rooms and stairs suit you; the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum is included in castle admission.

Before you go

The King’s Gate upper floors are currently inaccessible while lift access is being restored. Plan around the open areas and contact Cadw before travelling if access to upper levels matters.

The practical details

Where to find it
King’s Gate entrance, Caernarfon LL55 2AY; above the quayside car parks.
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
Buy on arrival or book online; Cadw advertises an online discount and non-refundable tickets. Check the current closure notice and seasonal last entry. The King’s Gate café is closed; the pop-up offers light refreshments Friday–Sunday from September, so plan lunch in town.
Access and getting around
A ramp enters the King’s Gate and the castle can be enjoyed at ground level. Many other areas require steep, narrow and uneven stairs; the climb from the quay to the entrance is steep. The current upper-floor closure overrides the usual lift arrangement. Toilets include a ramped-access set.
Official access information ↗
Visiting with children
Under-fives enter free. Keep children close on stairs and take rests between towers; a ground-level visit is a valid shorter choice. The Northeast Tower presentation has loud sound and flashing lights, so ask staff about avoiding it if needed.

Practical information checked 14 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 2–3 hours for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
