Galeri provides the clearest fully indoor focus in this collection, while a booked railway journey lets you watch the landscape from a carriage. The castle has enclosed spaces, but it is still a partly exposed visit with wet stone underfoot. Choose the experience you actually want, rather than buying an outdoor ticket simply to get out of a shower.
For a compact wet-weather outing, book a Galeri film or performance and allow its running time plus 20–30 minutes to arrive and settle in. Add a meal before or afterwards, checking food service separately from the box-office hours. A short look at Victoria Dock can fill a dry interval, but it need not be part of the plan. Around three hours often accommodates a film and meal; the shorter version is simply the screening and a drink. The Gelert Explorer offers a longer change of scenery under cover for much of the journey. Book the Caernarfon departure and return, bring layers for platforms and decide how much of the Beddgelert interval to spend outside. The station-to-village slope and lack of accessible toilets on board are important when choosing this option. Rain can soften the views, and a service may not run on your chosen day, so it is a planned outing rather than a last-minute guarantee. If the castle is your priority, allow time to move carefully between rooms and courtyards and wear shoes for slippery steps. Its upper King’s Gate floors and café are currently closed; plan your warm meal elsewhere. Check Sunday screenings directly; the café’s usual Sunday closure does not establish whether a particular film is scheduled. Gypsy Wood and the free walks remain outdoor choices despite small sheltered areas.
FIND YOUR KIND OF DAY
Galeri adds contemporary culture to a town often approached through its medieval buildings. Choose a film, concert or theatre event from the programme and spend a settled stretch indoors at Victoria Dock. It is especially useful when you want a definite evening plan or a break from exposed stonework, with the waterfront immediately outside for a short look before the event.
Depart beside the castle for a very different scale of outing: the Welsh Highland Railway climbs away from the coast towards mountain scenery. The Gelert Explorer is a return journey from Caernarfon to Beddgelert with an interval there. Treat it as the day’s main booking, with time to sit and look through the carriage windows, rather than a quick ride between town attractions.
The castle dominates the meeting of town and river, but its scale makes more sense once you step inside. Polygonal towers and bands of coloured masonry were part of Edward I’s statement of power after war with the Welsh princes. Explore the courtyards and whichever open rooms and stairs suit you; the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum is included in castle admission.

Only partly. Courtyards and many routes are exposed, and stone stairs can be slippery. The King’s Gate upper floors are currently inaccessible, so do not count on them as extra shelter.
