CAERNARFON GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

A booked journey from coast to mountains / CAERNARFON

Welsh Highland Railway from Caernarfon

Depart beside the castle for a very different scale of outing: the Welsh Highland Railway climbs away from the coast towards mountain scenery. The Gelert Explorer is a return journey from Caernarfon to Beddgelert with an interval there. Treat it as the day’s main booking, with time to sit and look through the carriage windows, rather than a quick ride between town attractions.

Before you go

Choose a journey that actually departs from Caernarfon and check its return time. Gelert Explorer occupies roughly four hours, plus arrival time; other named services use different starting stations and durations.

The practical details

Where to find it

Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
Services do not all run every day. Book the exact outward and return arrangement, arrive around 30 minutes early and arrange assistance in advance. Refreshments or a pre-ordered picnic cost extra; confirm availability. A station visit alone does not include a train ride.
Access and getting around
Caernarfon station has level facilities, accessible toilets and a Changing Places room. Wheelchair spaces are limited and must be booked with the railway; carriage size limits apply. There are no accessible toilets on trains. Beddgelert’s village approach is a long sloping route, with stairs on the alternative approach.

Visiting with children
Bring enough to occupy children during a long return journey and plan food before boarding. Ask about the current child fare and space for pushchairs when booking. The Beddgelert interval is for a manageable break; children need energy for the slope back to the station.
