An adaptable walk beside the railway / CAERNARFON
Lôn Eifion from Caernarfon
The old railway corridor gives you an easy way to leave the busiest streets for a walk of your own length. Start near Caernarfon’s Welsh Highland Railway and follow the signed Lôn Eifion south, turning back while everyone still has energy. The longer route continues through countryside towards Bryncir, but you do not need to complete it to enjoy a change of pace.

Decide your turnaround by time, not by a distant village name. A 20–30-minute outward walk and the return makes a useful short outing without committing to the full cycle route.
The practical details
- Where to find it
- Southern end of Caernarfon, alongside the Welsh Highland Railway corridor; signed National Cycle Network route 8.
Directions and arrival information ↗ - Tickets and booking
- No entry ticket is needed. Walking is free; cycle hire, food and transport are separate. Check local notices and surface conditions after poor weather, and use daylight. Longer rides require their own route and return planning.
- Access and getting around
- Much of the former railway route is surfaced, but it rises gradually and is shared with cyclists. Access points and later road crossings need attention. Check the route map and local barriers for your chosen section; the full combined route is not entirely traffic-free.
Official access information ↗ - Visiting with children
- Keep children close where cycles pass and at crossings. Bring water and use a turnaround that leaves energy for the return. A train may pass on the adjacent railway when services run, but this is not a guaranteed train-watching session.

Make it part of your day
Allow 45–90 minutes for a short out-and-back for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
