IWM Duxford

Aircraft and the surviving airfield setting make Duxford a substantial outing beyond Cambridge. Walk between hangars and choose the periods or aircraft that interest you most, allowing time to understand the people and conflict behind the machines. This is a large museum site to plan around, not a quick extra after sightseeing in town.

Check the museum’s transformation updates before choosing your must-see objects. Displays and access can change as work progresses; do not buy general admission expecting an air show or guaranteed flying.

Tickets and booking: Book the correct date and check whether it is an event day. Air shows and cockpit experiences have separate terms. Plan outward and return transport before paying; ordinary visitor parking is free but air-show parking differs.
Access and getting around: The site stretches about a mile. IWM lists bookable loan wheelchairs and scooters, transport on request and a Changing Places toilet in Hangar 1. Aircraft noise can be sudden; sensory equipment and a quiet room are available.

Visiting with children: Choose a couple of hangars and a proper break before deciding whether to continue. Under-fives have free general admission. The outdoor play area is a weather-dependent pause, and the museum’s conflict themes may need explanation.
