Conwy Castle

Begin with the two courts and surviving royal rooms, then choose a tower climb for views over the estuary and the streets you will explore afterwards. Conwy’s eight-towered fortress provides the scale for the whole town: walls, quay and High Street are easier to place once you have looked out from it. Leave time for the lower spaces instead of treating every staircase as compulsory.

Before you go

Decide on the castle and Plas Mawr before buying admission. A joint ticket can suit a full history day, but only when both sites are open and you have time for two substantial visits.

Tickets and booking: Buy online or on arrival. Check current concessions and the same-day joint ticket with Plas Mawr, whose winter closure differs from the castle. Last admission is before closing and winter hours are shorter. The castle is separate from the free town-wall walk, part of which remains closed.
Access and getting around: The visitor centre has level access and automatic doors. Reaching the castle involves a steep path of about 50 metres with several steps. Inside are uneven cobbles, further short flights and steep spiral stairs. An accessible toilet is at visitor-centre ground level; other toilets and baby changing are down stairs. Contact Cadw if the approach would prevent your visit.

Visiting with children: Choose a court, a few rooms and one suitable climb before adding more towers. Supervise children near low walls and on narrow stairs; a pushchair cannot follow the full route. Under-fives currently enter free, with paid junior and family tickets available.
