Durham Cathedral

Stand beneath the great patterned pillars, explore the cathedral’s scale and leave time for a quiet pause. This is the centrepiece of the peninsula and a working place of worship, so a visit rewards patience more than a list of rooms. The museum, tours and tower are optional experiences with separate arrangements.

Check visitor hours and the service calendar, especially on Sundays. The doors being open for worship does not mean every area is available for sightseeing.

Tickets and booking: General admission is free, with donations encouraged. The museum and tours have separate tickets. Do not assume free cathedral entry includes a tower climb or museum visit.
Access and getting around: Most of the site, including the main entrance, museum, café and shop, has ramp or lift access. Some floors are uneven and lighting is low; the tower is stairs only. Arrange any essential accessible parking before arrival.

Visiting with children: Keep the first visit focused on a few details children can spot, with a break afterwards. Consult family activities for your date; the optional tower is a substantial stair climb, not part of an ordinary cathedral visit.
