Durham’s rainy-day strength is the choice between a compact peninsula visit and a longer museum afternoon. The cathedral and archaeology museum are close neighbours; the Oriental Museum is a separate destination with more collection time. Castle interiors depend on a tour slot, and gardens still mean walking outside between sheltered spaces.
On Monday–Saturday, for the least outdoor movement, allow 60–90 minutes in the cathedral during visitor hours, a few minutes across Palace Green to the archaeology museum for 45–75 minutes, then an hour for lunch. These are editorial estimates and do not include your journey up the hill. Check Sunday and event arrangements before fixing the order. A shorter version chooses one interior and a warm meal, especially if a wet uphill approach is already enough. The Oriental Museum can fill a separate two-hour visit on its opening days; check the Monday/bank-holiday rules and plan a suitable journey to Elvet Hill. A pre-booked castle tour offers another indoor story but includes outdoor access and uneven stairs, so do not assume it is a last-minute all-weather solution. Keep footwear suitable for wet stone and avoid using the riverbank as a hurried connection between bookings.

This is the centrepiece of the peninsula and a working place of worship, so a visit rewards patience more than a list of rooms. The museum, tours and tower are optional experiences with separate arrangements.

The compact museum provides a useful counterpoint to the cathedral and castle: everyday material evidence alongside monumental buildings. Choose it as a focused short visit on Palace Green rather than mistaking it for a separate cross-city journey.
Explore art and archaeology from Asian cultures and ancient Egypt away from the peninsula’s better-known buildings. Pick two galleries that interest you and make room for their differences, rather than trying to absorb the whole collection. This is a worthwhile destination in its own right on Elvet Hill, especially for an indoor afternoon.
Discover the castle through its chapels, halls and changing use as both a seat of power and a university college. A guided visit gives the interiors a story that the exterior alone cannot provide. The building is still used by students, so the route and available dates belong in your planning from the outset.
