River Wear & Prebends Bridge walk

See the peninsula from below on a short riverbank walk towards Prebends Bridge. Trees, the water and the cathedral above create a very different view from Palace Green. Choose one bank and a return point, with time on a bench, rather than treating every riverside path as one easy continuous circuit.

Before you go

Routes include slopes, steps and narrow sections. After heavy rain, check conditions and signs and turn back if the path is muddy or flooded; do not use a river walk as a guaranteed shortcut to a timed tour.

Where to find it: River Wear below Durham’s cathedral peninsula; plan access from the city and the Prebends Bridge area.

Tickets and booking: Public footpaths have no admission ticket. Check daylight and local notices. Food, parking and any boat activity are separate from this walking suggestion.
Access and getting around: The cathedral describes narrower paths, slopes and steps on sections across the river. City approaches also vary; this is not a verified step-free loop. Choose a suitable access point from an official map and assess surfaces on the day.

Visiting with children: Keep children close at river edges and steps. A short out-and-back section gives an easier turnaround decision than a full circuit, particularly with a pushchair or tired walkers.
