St Catherine’s Castle

This small Tudor artillery fort above Readymoney guarded the entrance to Fowey Harbour. Its ruined gun tower and coastal position reward a short exploration, but the approach is a steep woodland climb and the site has unguarded drops.

Tickets and booking: Free entry during reasonable daylight hours. No vehicle access. The seasonal steps from the beach may be absent or cut off by high tide; use the signed woodland approach and follow current site notices.
Access and getting around: English Heritage describes foot-only access, a steep woodland climb that can become muddy and uneven surfaces. There are unguarded drops within the ruins. This is not a wheelchair route; toilets are down at Readymoney.

Visiting with children: Keep children close throughout and do not climb the walls. Families with tired legs or buggies may prefer to remain at the cove instead of tackling the headland.
